Matthew Fordham

Registered Massage Therapist

About me.

I have been practicing as a Registered Massage Therapist in a clinical setting since 2017. In April 2022, I expanded into my own practice, allowing me to further refine my skills while focusing on personalized, long-term treatment plans for my clients.

In addition to my RMT certification, I hold a Bachelor of Kinesiology from the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, BC. This academic background, combined with years of hands-on clinical experience, provides me with a deep understanding of human anatomy and physiology—enabling me to develop highly effective, individualized treatment plans.

I specialize in deep tissue therapeutic massage, with a particular interest in working with athletes. However, you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit. Many of us spend long hours sitting—whether at work or at home—which can lead to chronic tension, postural imbalances, and persistent discomfort. Targeted deep tissue treatment can help relieve upper back and neck pain, reduce tension headaches, and manage migraines.

Each treatment is tailored specifically to your needs. Whether your goal is to improve athletic performance, recover from intense training, or address the aches and pains of everyday life, I use a variety of clinical techniques and modalities to help you achieve lasting results.

No matter your starting point, we’ll work together to create a treatment plan that supports your health, mobility, and overall well-being.

  • Are you very physically active or do you participate in sports?

  • Do you work in a stressful environment?

  • Are you a professional athlete or do you compete in sports?

  • Do you participate in regular gym workouts?

  • Do you sit at a desk or a computer for extended periods of time?

  • Do you sit or drive for extended periods of time?

  • Do you experience pain or decreased mobility following exercise or at the beginning or end of the day?

  • Do you have an occupation that requires repetitive movements or presents demanding strain on the body?

  • Do you suffer from chronic headaches?

  • Do you suffer from chronic fatigue?

  • Do you wake up feeling stiff each morning?

Could You Benefit From Massage Therapy?

Yes! For sure!

Techniques.

  • Cupping therapy is a technique used to promote myofascial release. Fascia is a network of connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscle fibers throughout the body. By applying gentle suction through specialized cups, this therapy helps lift and stretch the fascia, allowing muscles to move more freely and efficiently.

The suction created by the cups also encourages increased blood flow, which may support the body’s natural healing processes and help relieve muscle tension.

Cups can be applied in two ways:

    • Static placement – cups are left in place for several minutes

    • Dynamic (gliding) technique – cups are moved across the skin using oil for a massage-like effect

Cupping therapy is generally a deeply relaxing treatment and is often combined with massage to enhance overall results.

This practice has a long history, dating back to ancient civilizations including Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. One of the earliest medical texts, the Ebers Papyrus (1550 BC), documents the use of cupping therapy in ancient Egypt.

  • Active Release Technique (ART) is a hands-on soft tissue therapy designed to relieve tension and restore normal movement by addressing fibrosis and adhesions. These adhesions can develop in muscles and surrounding tissues due to overuse, repetitive strain, or injury.

When adhesions form, they can restrict movement and lead to symptoms such as:

    • muscle weakness

    • stiffness

    • aching or pain

    • numbness or tingling

    • burning sensations

ART works by combining precise pressure with specific patient movements to break up these adhesions, improve tissue mobility, and restore proper function.

This technique can be used to treat both acute and chronic conditions, and is effective for issues involving:

    • muscles

    • tendons

    • ligaments

    • nerves

    • fascia

ART is commonly used to address repetitive strain injuries, sports-related conditions, and general musculoskeletal dysfunction.

  • Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Release (IASTR) is a specialized myofascial therapy used to assess and treat soft tissue restrictions.

This technique utilizes ergonomically designed instruments, typically made of stainless steel, with beveled edges and contours that adapt to different areas of the body. These tools allow for precise treatment and deeper tissue penetration compared to manual techniques alone.

IASTR is used to both detect and treat soft tissue dysfunction, helping to identify areas of restriction, scar tissue, or abnormal tissue texture.

By applying controlled pressure, the instruments help to:

    • break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue

    • improve tissue mobility and flexibility

    • stimulate blood flow and healing

    • restore normal movement patterns

This therapy is effective for a wide range of conditions, including chronic tightness, repetitive strain injuries, and post-injury scar tissue.

  • Deep tissue manual therapy uses slow, sustained pressure to target deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. This technique is especially effective for relieving chronic aches, tension, and areas of tightness.

Focused pressure is applied to trigger points—sensitive areas within the muscle—to help release built-up tension, lactic acid, and other metabolic waste that can contribute to knots and referred pain.

Myofascial release techniques may also be incorporated. These gentle, sustained stretches work on the fascia (connective tissue surrounding muscles) to improve mobility, reduce stiffness, and alleviate pain associated with restricted movement.

  • Mobilization is a manual therapy technique focused on restoring movement to joints and soft tissues. It involves the careful application of controlled movements and gentle stretching to improve elasticity and overall function.

This approach is commonly used to reduce joint stiffness, relieve pain, and enhance range of motion. The ultimate goal is to restore normal, pain-free movement.

Mobilization techniques are typically small, slow, and rhythmic, making them a safe and effective starting point for treating joint and soft tissue restrictions. Because of their gentle nature, they are often used early in the rehabilitation process to prepare the body for more advanced therapeutic interventions.

  • Trigger point therapy is a targeted manual technique used to relieve pain and muscle tightness caused by sensitive areas known as trigger points. These points can develop within muscle tissue and often contribute to localized discomfort or referred pain.

The technique involves applying direct, sustained pressure to the trigger point. This pressure temporarily reduces blood flow and oxygen to the area, which can help decrease muscle spasm and promote relaxation once the pressure is released.

As muscle tension builds during the application, the body’s natural response—known as autogenic inhibition—helps the muscle relax and lengthen. This process supports the release of tightness, reduces pain, and restores more normal muscle function.

  • Please make sure to arrive on time. We are located inside the Evolve Strength building. When you enter, check in with the front desk staff, and they will direct you to the correct area.

  • Massage therapy can be very effective for reducing pain, but it’s important to understand that results are not always immediate. In some cases, you may notice relief right away, while in others it can take several hours after your session for the full effects to be felt.

For acute issues, a small number of treatments may be enough to resolve the problem. However, chronic conditions often require multiple sessions to achieve lasting relief. Think of it like starting a fitness routine—you wouldn’t expect to reach your goals after just one workout, and the same principle applies to massage therapy.

When applied appropriately, massage therapy may require a series of treatments to help you reach your pain relief goals. If your condition or injury falls outside the scope of massage therapy, we will always ensure you are referred to the most appropriate healthcare professional for your needs.

Today I woke up without back pain for the first time in forever. Matt is incredibly professional and truly knows his craft. The atmosphere was relaxing, and he took the time to understand my needs. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for relief and a great massage experience!”

“Matthew is one of a kind. Simply the best deep tissue massage therapist I have ever had. I have had years of chiro maintenance but was never satisfied with a quick crack and be gone. But Matthew is very attentive to your problem areas and will make sure he addresses them through a variety of techniques. He is very professional and I will never see anyone else.”

— Mark A.

“After a back injury over a year ago, my physiotherapist suggested I get a deep tissue massage from Matthew. I was really nervous. I had only really had spa-like massages, and never one from a man. Matthew is so professional, and he makes you feel right at home. I needed a lot of work on my back and glutes. Matthew always keeps me draped with a sheet during those uncomfortable glute massages and makes sure I am always comfortable. I see Matthew regularly, as he has helped me immensely with my back health and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a strong, professional massage therapist.”

— Patricia M.

“Matt was fantastic. Very professional, deep tissue and he definitely knows how the human body works. I’m a migraine sufferer and it’s hard to find someone who knows what to do when one of those hits. I have found my new massage therapist!”

— Nadia P.

“As a professional tennis coach, I am always dealing with immense muscle strain and bone/joint pain related to my demanding physical sportsman job. Matthew’s massages are the only remedy that truly help me to revitalize and restore my performance. Best massage therapist! Highly recommended!”

“I went to see Matthew for the first time today and was blown away from start to finish. He was professional and very knowledgeable, yet warm and welcoming. I felt comfortable and at ease. Matthew was extremely attentive throughout my treatment, checking in periodically to see how I was doing and explaining each area he worked on. He was patient while I settled my bill and gave me great aftercare instructions, He even warned me that I might be a little tender the next day. I honestly expected that the pain I was experiencing would just be made bearable by the end of my visit, but I feel great and am looking forward to a wonderful, painless rest tonight. I 100% recommend Matthew for anything you need.”
